Don Shula, 1930-2020

Just like the rest of the footballing world, the boys from Far From Lombardi were saddened to hear of the passing of the legendary Don Shula. Coach of the invincible Miami Dolphins team of 1972, with a record of 17-0 and included winning Super Bowl 7, he was elevated to truly legendary status in the game. In addition to that perfect season he also holds the record for winning the most games, or as our American cousins like to say, the most ‘winningest’ coach, with 347 wins. He is definitely in the conversation for greatest coach of all time.

Don Shula was inducted in to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1997 and had appeared in five Super Bowls with the Dolphins, winning in 72 and 73 and one appearance with the Baltimore Colts. He was NFL coach of the year on 5 separate occasions and had only 2 losing seasons in 33 years as a head coach. A truly remarkable record.

In a statement on the Dolphins owner Stephen Ross said of Shula “His contributions to his sport, to the Miami Dolphins franchise, and to the South Florida community will have a lasting impact. We were so fortunate to have him associated with the Dolphins for 50 years, and he was a source of inspiration to me every time I was around him. There will never be anyone like him, and I want to extend my condolences to his wife, Mary Anne, and the entire Shula family”

Rest in peace Coach.
