Show Your Support

One of the fun aspects of supporting an American sports team is that you are free from the usual reasons we have for the UK teams that we support – basically supporting your local team and/or the team that your dad forced on you as a kid! No such restrictions here, you are free to pick your team by any means necessary. Favourite US city? Go for it. Favourite colours? Sure. The team has a Brit playing for them? Sound. You fancy a bit of glory hunting? Well, you’ll still get grief for doing that (looking at you, Patriots fans!)

Following on from Rob’s great review last week, where he gives you an introduction to all 32 NFL teams (now you know which Super-Bowl-less franchises to laugh at), this week we take a look at how and why the Far From Lombardi lads got in to the NFL and how we all picked the teams that we did.

…I worked weekends gigging and Sunday became my night for drinking and there’s no better sport to drink to.

Rob, 32, Liverpool – Kansas City Chiefs

I got into the NFL because I worked weekends gigging and Sunday became my night for drinking and there’s no better sport to drink to.

The Chiefs, and in particular Alex Smith, stole my heart on 1st November 2015 when visiting Wembley. The Chiefs destroyed the Lions and in doing so won my heart. The colours, the chop, the QB who loved legging it, was enough to make them my own.

I picked my team based on where I’d been in the States so it was always going to be a Florida team.

Tony, 31, Liverpool – Miami Dolphins

3 years ago I was invited round to one of the lads for a poker and gambling night and it was the opening of the NFL season. I’d never watched a game before but once I knew I could have a bet on it, I was hooked! The first game was Chiefs vs Patriots and the Chiefs won the game!

I picked my team based on where I’d been in the States so it was always going to be a Florida team.  The Miami Dolphins just stuck out to me because I knew who Dan “The Man” Marino was.

I used an NFL roulette team picker to select my team and it came out with the Redskins.

Mark, 36, Liverpool – Washington Redskins

I was introduced to the NFL by a friend about 4 years ago.  I used an NFL roulette team picker to select my team and it came out with the Washington Redskins...  (Unlucckkkeee!)

The Giants were still good… so I backed the underdog and bought a Gang Green hoody.

Tom, 28, Bolton – New York Jets

I started watching the NFL during my summer in America. My then partner insisted I support the Colts. When that relationship ended, so did my support for Indianapolis!

I switched allegiance to the Jets two years later on a trip to New York. The Giants were still good then, so I backed the underdog and bought a Gang Green hoody. No regrets.

I got sucked in by the ’85 Bears, William “The Fridge” Perry, the Super Bowl Shuffle, all that.

Ian, 41, Runcorn

I got in to the NFL as a young lad in the 80s. My best friend was a Giants fan and usually everything he liked was cool, so I gave it a go. He was right, as always, it was cool.

When it came to picking a team, I got sucked in by the ’85 Bears, William “The Fridge” Perry, the Super Bowl Shuffle, all that.  When a family friend brought back a Bears pennant from Chicago, it was put straight on my wall and my allegiance was set.
