A few weeks ago we shared with you the reasons the FFL lads got in to the NFL and how they selected their teams and with our explanations ranging from my band-wagon-jumping to Mark’s random-roulette-spinning and Tom’s ex-girlfriend-rebellion and Tony and Rob basically being drinking and gambling degenerates, I was looking forward to reading what our listeners and readers had to say!
To this day I still hate on Favre and the Packers – I hated all the gimps with cheese foam hats on BADLYFarris, 37, Liverpool – New England Patriots
The Shriners Children’s Hospital in Boston was having a Super Bowl XXXI party for Pats v Packers in the 96/97 season. I have absolutely ZERO memory of their journey to the big game and the hospital didn’t throw an AFC Championship party, knowing what I do now, they probably didn’t wanna jinx it after our previous super bowl appearance was a 46-10 drubbing to the Bears! To this day I still hate on Favre and the Packers – Hahaha hated all the gimps with cheese foam hats on BADLY
Obviously I was going with The Pats as I was living there half the year and despite that bitter loss, I stuck with them and I think we can all agree that has paid off handsomely!
If you want more insight in to Farris’ world – get on to his podcast, Full Metal Straight Jacket
I sat and watched Super Bowl XLVI and said to myself “whoever wins, that’s my team.” I’m glad it was the Giants because I also love the blue jerseys… and the Patriots kind of annoy me!Mark B, 32, Widnes – New York Giants
I’d had a curiosity about the NFL since I was a little kid but our (UK) football always took top priority for me. It was 2010 when I really started to take notice of the game because more of the NFL was being shown on Sky and I had more chance to watch it. I didn’t really have a team in the beginning I just really enjoyed watching it.
It was 2012 when I finally decided to choose a team to follow; I sat and watched Super Bowl XLVI and said to myself “whoever wins, that’s my team.” It ended up being the Giants beating the Patriots 21-17. Some might say I was unlucky because the Patriots have gone on to win a few more since then and the Giants can’t seem to get back to a winning season, but I’m glad it was the Giants because I also love the blue jerseys of the Big Blue G-Men – and the Patriots kind of annoy me!
I chose the Jets over the Giants because Topshop sold Giants gear and I didn’t want to be too mainstream. I preferred an AFC team as it felt grittier to me, I see the NFC as a bit poncey.Liam, 31, Liverpool – New York Jets
I started watching the NFL on Sky Sports one Christmas Eve when I was about 13 because there was no other sport on and my dad had just upgraded to the sports package. As I got older, I watched Super Bowls and playoffs on TV alone, then when I was about 19/20, I had a Super Bowl party as an excuse to play poker and get drunk. The tradition stuck and I got more and more into it. Last two seasons I have watched every Jets game.
I picked the Jets because I had visited New York and, for me, it’s the most iconic place in the world. I decided I wanted to follow a New York team … not realising at the time that the Jets and Giants are actually based in New Jersey! I chose the Jets over the Giants because Topshop sold Giants gear and I didn’t want to be too mainstream. I preferred an AFC team as it felt grittier to me, I see the NFC as a bit poncey. Also, Dan Hanzus is a Jet so I would be able to hear a lot of info about them. I also did a roulette wheel and it landed on the Jets. 3 years in, I’m loving it.
I decided on the Bears because I liked their history and I feel like Chicago is similar to Liverpool.Adam D, 32, Liverpool – Chicago Bears
I got introduced to NFL last year by a friend who used to talk about it all the time and it got my interest.
I studied the teams for a week and decided on the Bears because I liked their history and I feel like Chicago is similar to Liverpool, and they play at Solider Field, which is boss.
I loved reading through these (especially the Bears love, the Packers hate and, like my own story, more glory-hunting-gone-wrong!) How about you? Can you share a better reason for picking your team than being an NFL hipster, not wanting to choose a ‘poncey’ NFC team or a Madden team randomiser?
