NFL Week 1 Round Up

Week 1 is in the bag and wasn’t there some cracking results and performances (here’s looking at you 4th-Quarter-Mitch)? We’ll shortly be starting to look forward to the next one, particularly since the first Far From Lombardi bet got off to such a terrible start. With just 2 out of 5 correct picks and 1 push (ties get stakes returned for handicapped betting) it is back to the drawing board for us!

In fairness, we took a bit of a punt on the Dolphins but Mr Newton put any hopes of that bet coming in to bed with the kind of performance he’d probably been praying for ever since the Patriots picked him up. I honestly didn’t see the Colts losing to the Jags, that result was right up there with the Washington and Cardinal results for shock value – I know we picked the Cardinals for the acca, but it was more because I thought the spread was too big, I still expected the 49ers to win a close one.

Anyway, some crazy results there in week 1 and that’s why we love the NFL, let’s hope we can navigate around them in Week 2 and pick us all a winner! Look out for the next podcast episde coming soon with all the Week 1 round up and Week 2 previews.

You can see a round up of all the NFL scores over on the NFL website.

Week 1 FFL Fantasy Football Results

NFL Week 1 might have had some shocks in the real world but the Far From Lombardi Listener League had its own. Taking a look at the first round of matches there were some high scoring and very close games. Very impressive displays from top scoring Rob’s Crown Takers (unfortunately for me!) with 178 and Mark was beaten by an amazing showing by The HotBoyz, 162 to 152.

The Far From Lombardi Acca: Week 1

* Spoiler Warning: contains details of the Chiefs v Texans game from last night! *

In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.

Benjamin Franklin

Well, if Ben Franklin had been around quite a bit longer, he could have added “the Chiefs against the spread” to that sentence. They have covered the over on their last 6 games at home,

The Texans started well but you know you have to start, middle and finish well if you’re going to stop this Kansas team. Taking the lead with a David Johnson touchdown, it wasn’t long before the Texans found themselves behind and chasing the game. It was good to see David Johnson play well, he’s obviously just been a side-story in the trade that saw Hopkins move to Arizona. He rushed for 77 yards and scored a touchdown but I wish he’d have had the chance for more touches. But it wasn’t to be and the night belonged to the running back on the opposite team. Rookie Clyde Edwards-Helaire got off to great start to his Kansas career as he rushed for 138 yards and added a touchdown. To be the star of the show on your rookie debut is very impressive when you look around at all of the other star candidates on the field. He is clearly going to be a force to be reckoned with this year. Kansas win, 34-20.

So, to the Far From Lombardi Week 1 bets. We purposefully left the Chiefs out of the Acca this week just because there’s nothing worse than your bet going down before Sunday… We probably should’ve known better with this cert though!

Each week every member of the Far From Lombardi crew will make a selection for the acca on the podcast. I’ll be keeping a tally of every correct selection and price and by the end of the season we’ll be able to crown our own top tipster… listen to the latest podcast to see who picked which bet…

We placed our bet with William Hill and these selections return about 24.5/1 (correct as of 09/09/20).

Dolphins to beat the Patriots5/2
Colts (-7) to beat the Jags10/11
Bengals (+3) to beat the ChargersEvs
Steelers (-5) to beat the Giants10/11
The FFL Acca – Week 1

For what it is worth, I like the Colts and Steelers selections from above but my selection that would fit in with the acca would be the Cardinal (+7) to beat the 49ers at 10/11.

A Review of Last Week’s Bets

Last week Rob set the challenge for season long bets, giving everyone a virtual £20 bet per team with the 8 teams from 2 divisions to pick for.

* Prop Bets

The bookies weren’t brave enough to offer odds for Rob’s Rivers bet of under 10.5 starts, so Tom offered a tasty 13/2 which Rob and Tony took advantage of with £20 each (that’s real money, it’s in the notes!).

Arguably the best prop bet last week though, was when Tom set the over/ under on the number of fantasy leagues Tony would win… bearing in mind Tony is in 11 leagues, Tom set it at an insulting 0.5… and then took the under!  At a tempting 5/1,  Rob double the insult by snapping up £20 worth and Tom took him on for £10.  Surely Tony can win 1 league out of 11… surely?

Betting is Back

Money won is twice as sweet as money earned…

Eddie Felson, The Color of Money (1986)

I’m not gonna lie, the approaching NFL season has got me giddy, like a kid on the run-up to Christmas, and just like Christmas, I’ll inevitably be left disappointed as one team lets my acca down, it’s a like that feeling of opening another pair of socks and a Lynx Africa gift set. The sense of expectation crushed by cruel reality.

So, let the shit bets commence! When the schedules were announced for the coming season, we all went through the fixtures and came up with our predictions and in true degenerate fashion, I decided to put a bet on the 8-team-division-winners as an acca. We mostly went with the divisional favourites, all except for one deluded prescient Bears fan… (I’m definitely going to be to blame for the ‘one that let us down‘ aren’t I?!) The 8 team accumulator pays about 490/1 with William Hill, which should tell you all you need to know about our chances of this coming in!

The latest podcast includes more realistic season-long bets, as Rob gives the lads some virtual cash to make their picks (I think it’s virtual anyway, my £20 hasn’t turned up in the post yet…) There really can be some great value to be had with UK bookies on the NFL markets and each week of the season the lads will throw a tip or three your way, so tune in and decide who your top tipster is.

Betting is fun but it’s even better with free money – the link to the William Hill 2 x £15 free bets for a £10er that Tom mentions in this episode is below, or just click this link if you can’t be arsed scrolling down a few inches. Don’t be a divvy though, betting is supposed to be fun, if you can’t laugh about losing what you’ve bet, you’ve bet too much, take it easy, or you’ll end up like us lot!
